While American by birth, Pope Leo XIV holds dual citizenship with Peru

He is the first pope from the Order of Saint Augustine.

Pope Leo XIV dedicated many years to missionary work in Peru, serving as a parish pastor, seminary teacher, and eventually as the Bishop of Chiclayo.

In 2023, he was appointed by Pope Francis as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing the selection of bishops worldwide.

His election as the 267th pope occurred on the second day of the conclave, following the death of Pope Francis.

By selecting the name Leo XIV, he pays homage to Pope Leo XIII, known for his advocacy of workers' rights and social justice

In his first public address, Pope Leo XIV emphasized messages of peace, unity, and love, continuing the inclusive approach of his predecessor.

Known for his moderate views, he aims to bridge divides within the Church, promoting dialogue and inclusivity.
